Elise Mertens Defeats 2018 Winner in Straight Sets, Sets Up Showdown with Coco Gauff

The Belgian No.1, 28th in the world and seeded No.24, won at the expense of the 2018 winner of the tournament, considered by some to be the 5th Grand Slam tournament, in 2 sets (7-5; 6- 4) in one hour and 57 minutes of play.

The 26-year-old Japanese had won three of their previous four meetings. The last one dates back to the WTA 1000 in Miami in 2021.

Mertens will face Coco Gauff, 3rd in the world and 3rd seed, in the round of 16. The American, who will celebrate her 20th birthday on Wednesday, dismissed the Italian Lucia Bronzetti (WTA 53) 6-2, 7-6 (7/5) in the round of 16. The Floridian has beaten Mertens in their three matches played to date. The last one dates from the last US Open which Gauff was finally going to win.

Osaka, who lit the Olympic cauldron at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, is now only 287th in the world. She is returning to the circuit this year, after experiencing mental health concerns and especially having given birth on July 11 to her first child, a daughter named Shai.

Elise Mertens, world No.1 in doubles, is associated with Taiwanese Su-Wei Hsieh (WTA 2 in doubles) with whom she forms the No.1 seeded pair. The duo, still in the running, will meet in the quarter-finals the N.5 seed made up of the Dutchwoman Demi Schuurs (WTA 15 in doubles) and the Brazilian Luisa Stefani (WTA 13 in doubles), or the pair formed by the Norwegian Ulrikke Eikeri (WTA 29 in doubles) and the Chinese Hanyu Guo (WTA 35 in doubles).

Gillé and Vliegen do not reach the quarter-finals, beaten by a French duo

After beating the world’s best pair in the first round, Sander Gillé and Joran Vliegen failed to continue riding the wave of success in the second round of the doubles at the ATP Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Indian Wells.

The Limburgers who share 27th place in the world in doubles were beaten by the French Nicolas Mahut (ATP 38 in doubles) and Edouard Roger-Vasselin (ATP 12 in doubles) on Monday in the Californian desert (4-6;5-7) in one hour and 42 minutes of play.

In the quarter-finals (3rd round) of the tournament played on hard court and worth $9,495,555, Mahut/Roger-Vasselin will find on the other side of the net the Italians Jannik Sinner (the 3rd in the world in singles, 577th in doubles) and Lorenzo Sonego (ATP 55, 177th in doubles) or the pair of specialists formed by the Spaniard Marcel Granollers, 11th in the world in doubles, and the Argentinian Horacio Zeballos, 10th in the world in doubles. She is ranked 5th seed.
