Japan’s Uta Abe and her brother Hifumi, Olympic judo champions in Tokyo in 2021, are ready to support each other at the Paris 2024 Games on their way to gold.

In the Japanese capital, the Abes lived an incredible family history, with Hifumi winning gold on the same day, in the -66 kg category, and Uta, in the -52 kg category.

“If we both manage to advance in the tournament, that will help us support each other,” explains Uta, 23, who like her brother is also a quadruple world champion.

“The most important thing is to win (the fights) to reach the final,” he added during a promotional event organized in Tokyo by the Japanese Olympic Committee.

His brother does not hide his ambition: “As long as I prepare as I usually do, I am confident, there is no reason for me to be defeated.”

“I know that we both work hard and that we share the same goal,” explained the 26-year-old judoka.

“When I see her work and make so much effort, that gives me strength and encourages me to work hard too,” he added.

In Paris, they will take to the tatami again on the same day, July 28, with the final scheduled with a 30-minute interval between the men, at 5:38 p.m. local (3:38 p.m. GMT) and the women, at 6:09 p.m. (4:09 p.m. GMT) .
