BVB wrestles Union down, Leipzig with three goals in four minutes

Borussia Dortmund is struggling to get a much-needed win against Union Berlin. Competitor RB Leipzig turns its game against VfL Bochum within minutes. Bottom team Darmstadt experienced a debacle against Augsburg.
Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig continue to fight head-to-head for fourth place in the Bundesliga. BVB won 2-0 (1-0) at 1. FC Union Berlin on Saturday and is still one point ahead of rivals RB Leipzig after 24 match days, who won 4-1 (1-1) at VfL Bochum.
In the relegation battle, bottom team SV Darmstadt 98 was completely out of sorts and lost 0-6 (0-5) to FC Augsburg. Second to last remains FSV Mainz 05, who had to be content with a 1-1 (1-0) draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
1. FC Köln can thus increase their lead over the direct relegation places in the relegation zone, but will face unbeaten league leaders Bayer Leverkusen in the Rhenish derby on Sunday. The Werkself have the chance to extend their lead over defending champions Bayern Munich, who only played 2-2 at SC Freiburg on Friday, to ten points.
Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt stopped the downward trend of the last six games without a win with a 2-1 (1-0) win at 1. FC Heidenheim. In sixth place, the Hessians have separated themselves a little from the other competition for international places.
Karim Adeyemi (41′) and Ian Maatsen (90′) made Dortmund’s victory perfect with their goals and at the same time caused Berlin’s first home defeat under coach Nenad Bjelica. Leipzig fell behind early in Bochum thanks to a free kick goal from Maximilian Wittek (7th). Dani Olmo (30th), Lois Openda (69th), an own goal from Ivan Ordets (71st) and Yussuf Poulsen (72nd) turned the game around. To make matters worse, Bochum’s Moritz-Broni Kwarteng also flew off the pitch (86th).
Darmstadt experienced a catastrophic 30 minutes
Darmstadt experienced a terrible first half hour against Augsburg. Phillip Tietz (1st), Fredrik Jensen (12th), twice Ermedin Demirovic (20th and 29th) and Ruben Vargas (24th) coldly punished the Lilies’ many mistakes. Tietz also scored the final point (84th). According to data provider Opta, it was the third-fastest 5-0 lead in Bundesliga history. Only Freiburg in the 6-0 win in Gladbach in 2021 and Borussia themselves in the 10-0 win against Eintracht Braunschweig in 1984 were even faster.
A slapstick goal put Frankfurt on the road to victory in Heidenheim when goalkeeper Kevin Müller allowed a back pass from Benedikt Gimber to pass (39′). The goalkeeper hit under the ball as it bounced through a bump. After Frankfurt’s second goal by Niels Nkounkou (49th), Heidenheim’s Marvin Pieringer (59th) only managed the connecting goal.
Mainz could hope for its second home win in a row thanks to Jonathan Burkardt’s goal (12th), but Gladbach equalized through Nathan Ngoumou (55th). Mainz’s Dominik Kohr was shown a yellow-red card in the final phase (84′).
