German badminton team loses against Taiwan at the start of the World Cup

The weakened German men’s team lost the opening match against Taiwan 1:4 at the Badminton World Championships in Chengdu on Sunday (April 28, 2024).

The only point for the selection of the German Badminton Association (DBV) was won by the doubles Daniel Hess/Marvin Seidel. Kai Schäfer, Fabian Roth and Matthias Kicklitz performed admirably, each winning one set in the singles against the favored Asians.

Without the injured Mark Lamsfuß, Jones Jansen and Max Weißkirchen, the selection of the German Badminton Association (DBV) in China is considered an outsider. After bronze at the European Championships in February, further success is not expected at the tournament in China.

Still against Japan and the Czech Republic

“Especially without Mark Lamsfuß, it is difficult for us to win against these teams,” said Martin Kranitz, sports director of the German Badminton Association (DBV), who was skeptical about the group games against Japan and Taiwan in advance.

The remaining group games in the so-called Thomas Cup are against Japan (Monday, April 29, 2024 / 11 a.m. CEST) and the Czech Republic (Wednesday / 11 a.m. CEST). However, the German team still has a chance of winning against the Czech Republic.

The German women’s team did not qualify for the Team World Cup (Uber Cup).
