Basketball Players from BG Hessing Leitershofen/Stadtbergen Lose to Dragons Rhöndorf and Drop Out of Play-Off Ranks

The basketball players from BG Hessing Leitershofen/Stadtbergen lose in Rhöndorf and fall out of the playoff ranks again.

BG Hessing Leitershofen/Stadtbergen suffered another away defeat in the 2nd Basketball Bundesliga on Sunday afternoon. They lost to league leaders Dragons Rhöndorf 78:87. In the fight for the play-off places, valuable ground was lost. However, there is still a chance of achieving a season extension for the BG.

In the pretty Dragons Dome in Bad Honnef, just outside Bonn, the Kangaroos, who were once again unable to play the sick Nicolas Lagerman, initially seemed to have coped well with the longest journey of the season. They got into the game well and led 13:8 after eight minutes in a game that was initially dominated by defense on both sides. As has happened so often this season, they once again made a collective mistake and allowed their opponents a 12:2 run within the last two minutes of the first quarter to give them a 20:15 quarter lead. In situations like this, the people from Leitershofen have been making life difficult for themselves all season long and opponents like the league leaders from the Rhine are punishing them mercilessly. A similar picture then appeared in the second ten minutes: With very good play, they fought their way back to 28:30, only to let the deficit grow again to 38:48 by halftime.

Even after the break, we struggled and fought against an opponent who had a top line-up and who was always able to add quality from the bench. In particular, BBL double licensed player Tyreese Blunt (17 points) couldn’t really get a handle on it. The third quarter was narrowly lost 23:25, and the fourth quarter was even won 17:14. The smallest deficit in the second half was only eight points. All in all, it was simply not enough for the guests. The bottom line is that a surprise might even have been possible. However, a three-point percentage of a meager 19% (4 out of 21 shots) and 21 turnovers ultimately prevented this. The Rhöndorfers, on the other hand, were able to celebrate the championship in the southern group with the victory and, with home advantage, are considered one of the top candidates for promotion in the play-offs.

The Kangaroos, on the other hand, had to vacate eighth place in the play-offs, which they had recently regained. Both Ludwigsburg and Speyer passed the BG. However, the table remains tightly packed and is currently somewhat distorted due to the different number of matches played by the teams. However, it is clear that the Stadtbergers need at least two wins, if not three, from the games next week in Breitengüssbach, on Easter Saturday at home against Coburg and then in the main round final in Oberhaching. Not an easy task, but also not an impossible task in a league that continues to be characterized by balance, tension and drama.

BG Hessing Leitershofen/Stadtbergen: Kuprat, Würmseher (2), Lagerman, Carter (25), Heinrich, Duarte (6), Benke (2), Westermeir (11), März (7), Theiß (4), Vanaclocha (15 ), Hanzalek (6).

Voices about the game

Emanuel Richter (BG head coach): It’s actually a shame, in my opinion Rhöndorf was beatable today. But not when you cause 21 turnovers and miss eleven free throws at the same time. Now it’s time to wipe your mouth and continue working. We are facing another final game in Breitengüssbach that we have to win.

Andreas Moser (Kangaroos Managing Director): Something that we feared happened on this match day. The positive thing is that we have now all completed very long away trips and that we still have it in our own hands to reach the play-offs. Our team is intact and definitely wants to reach the play-offs. (asan)
