Agustín Gil: A Rising Star in Cordoba Judo – Dreams, Sacrifices, and Success

At 23 years old and with several scrolls under his belt, Cordoba judoka Agustín Gil has high goals. He has worked for that, and the results have supported him with international medals and fights won over high-ranking rivals. He is among those who consider that medals are earned in training, and that judo is a way of life.

“The life of a high-performance athlete consists of dedicating your entire day to thinking about how to perform in the best way in training, to be able to progress technically, tactically and physically over time,” he shoots. “With the issue of studies, you have to try to adjust your schedules, day by day, to dedicate time to it. Obviously it costs, but anything is possible,” adds the disciple of Jorge Lencina.

This way of thinking allows you to be satisfied with the objectives you are achieving. “Of course. As you grow as a person and athlete, your goals change, but the ambition to try to achieve them is always the same,” he reflects.

The trainings

For now, Agustín focuses one hundred percent on his training with the national team and with Lencina: “every day of training we try to perfect both technically and tactically all the knowledge learned, and whenever we can learn something new, it is welcome.”

Like many other athletes, he works on developing his physical appearance with Bernardo Bonnet in the Central Club gym. “Working with Bernardo is something incredible,” he says. I have no doubt that he is one of the best coaches in Argentina, and that every day he feels the physical progress. Furthermore, he has everything planned in his head so that, over time, we can reach excellence.”

The other complement is “mental work with my psychologist Santiago Orgaz, with whom we work on different topics in each session, whether pressure, self-confidence or winning mentality among other aspects.”

Renewed dreams

The man from Córdoba assures that for an athlete “dreams and goals, once achieved, are renewed. Once I achieved the dream of being an Olympian, I think the next thing would be to represent Argentina in another Olympic game, and have my best performance. And of course, win all possible competitions.”

While those desires arrive, Agustín “enjoys the process”: “I think the best thing that happened to me in sport was having met my friends, with whom I share the passion of practicing this beautiful sport. In fact, spending time with the people I appreciate the most and enjoying nice conversations and good times are my hobby. Furthermore, judo gave me the opportunity to get to know many countries, which I would not have known on my own.”

And he continues: “When practicing a high-performance sport, many things are sacrificed. Family gatherings, getting together with friends, all to dedicate time to training and sports evolution. However, the satisfaction is extreme when all the sacrifice is reflected in positive results,” he concluded.
