RS Berkane – USM Alger: match canceled because of the jersey of shame

Unsurprisingly, the match between RS Berkane and USM Alger in the semi-final second leg of the Confederation Cup was not played on Sunday evening. The Moroccan club presented itself with its jersey of shame on which is printed the map of Morocco including occupied Western Sahara.

And the Algerian club refused to play against a club whose jersey carries a clear political message in total contradiction with Algeria’s positions on the conflict in the former Spanish colony.

Title holders, USM Alger thus leave the competition and RS Berkane will play the final against Zamalek. This matter is not over, since CAF has not yet pronounced its sentence against the Algerian club after the cancellation of the second match and the conflict is now before the CAS in Lausanne.

The Algerian Football Federation appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Friday against CAF, which ruled in favor of the Moroccan club, even though FIFA rules prohibit clubs from playing with political messages on their outfits.

Presidential elections in Algeria: the debate begins timidly

Slowly, the debate on the early presidential elections of September 7 is taking hold in Algeria. Three political figures have declared their candidacy for the moment: the president of the Union for Change and Progress (UCP) Zoubida Assoul, the Secretary General of the PT, Louisa Hanoune and the president of the ANR, Belkacem Sahli.

Louia Hanoune and Belkacem Sahli are increasing their number of outings in the field and in the media to talk, each in their own way, about the anticipated presidential election on September 7.

Sunday, Louisa Hanoune was the guest of the editorial staff of Channel III of Algerian Radio. The Patron of the PT justified her party’s decision to participate in this election by the global situation marked, according to her, by the risk of a third planetary conflict.

« Our country is already targeted, even surrounded, at the global level by the dangers of great powers, and this, because of the position developed by the Algerian State via its representation on the UN Security Council“, did she say.

On Saturday, the Jil Jadid party, whose president Soufiane Djillali has not yet decided on his participation in the next presidential election, estimated that “ the meeting of September 7 must be the one which opens the field to a real political debate, free, serious and carrying a real awareness of the issues. The destiny of Algeria must in no case be mortgaged by political calculations or by personal interests ».

Jil Jadid finds, however, that the “ conditions for a vote useful to the nation are not yet met » and deplored that for “ for incomprehensible reasons, the public debate has so far still not started. Public and private media are lifeless and political society still in hibernation ».

Situation in Gaza: Netanyahu under threat from the ICC

Nearly eight months after the start of the war in Gaza, the UN draws up a damning assessment. Israeli bombings have reduced the Palestinian enclave to piles of rubble. According to the UN, 70% of homes in the Palestinian enclave have been destroyed.

All that remains are the structures and the rare houses still standing, testifying to life in the past, that is to say, before the start of the war on October 7.

The scenes of massive destruction in Gaza which were filmed by UNRWA are chilling and bear witness to the extent of the damage in the Palestinian enclave as well as the suffering of the population who are subjected to bombings and a total embargo on food, water, medicine…

As the Gaza solidarity movement gains momentum at American universities, Israel is taking seriously the threat of an international arrest warrant against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other members of his government.

Israeli media considered possible on Sunday the issuance by the ICC prosecutor of arrest warrants against leaders of their country, headed by Benyamin Netanyahu, the main architect of the war of destruction in Gaza which according to many political leaders in the world, a genocide in the Palestinian enclave.

Benjamin Netanyahu reacted on Friday by saying that “ under (his) leadership, Israel will never accept any attempt by the ICC to undermine its inherent right to defend itself ».
