Major Bug Fix in Helldivers 2 Allows Over a Million Players to Access Higher Difficulties Again

More than a million Helldivers 2 players should finally be able to play the game on higher difficulties again thanks to a major bug fix from Arrowhead Game Studios.

Considering the popularity and success of Helldivers 2, the game has been very buggy since its release in February. One notorious issue that spanned over a month was a bug that prevented some players from accessing higher difficulties despite meeting the requirements to unlock them. Arrowhead did provide a workaround, but it seems like the bug should now be permanently fixed, at least for some players.

Backlog due to tons of problems

In a post on the official Helldivers 2 Discord channel, which was subsequently shared via Reddit, developer Spitz explained that the team recently went through “a series of manual progress requests” to fix the issue for approximately 1,300,000 players. While this is good news, it unfortunately also has a downside. According to Spitz, the sheer volume of these requests “caused a small backlog in the system” that led to “hiccups” in other areas of Helldivers 2, particularly in-store purchases and other account functions.

Spitz has assured Helldivers that they will resolve the remaining requests in smaller batches over the next few days. If you have encountered the error yourself, you should definitely check whether you now have access to higher difficulty levels. If not, you’ll have to be patient a little longer, but the error should be fixed sooner rather than later.

Helldivers 2 bought around 8 million

Some Reddit users have confirmed in the comments that they are no longer affected by the bug. OriginalGoatan and RedditorsAreAssss report that they suddenly unlocked new difficulty levels after completing missions. The majority are grateful that the bug has been fixed and understand Arrowhead’s commitment to fixing Helldivers 2’s myriad problems. On the contrary, Redditor lelel86 expressed concern that the game has become “a bit too big and too big for them” due to this issue.

Helldivers 2 has been one of the biggest surprises of 2024 so far. Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt admitted in February that the game was “busting estimates” in terms of sales. Analyst Doug Creutz (via Bloomberg) estimated that the game has sold at least eight million copies. One would think that this would make Arrowhead an attractive acquisition target for publisher Sony, but Pilestedt has already denied rumors that his studio could be bought out by the PlayStation Company.
