Stuttgart Reds Dominate Munich Hair Disciples in Home Opener: Game Recap

In front of well-filled stands and in perfect baseball weather, the Stuttgart Reds were able to record their first home win of the season on Saturday, April 27, 2024: After a real “hit parade,” the TV Cannstatt team managed a 16:5 demolition win against the Munich Hair Disciples. The guests won the second game of the doubleheader 4:8.

At first, it looked like a close game in Game 1: After one run in the first inning and the visitors’ temporary lead, the Reds added four more runs in the second half of the game – only to see the Disciples immediately beat the Reds. Starting pitcher Kevin Riello made it 5-5. But from this point on, only the “Reds” were celebrating: time and again the home team brought the ball into play, which always found the gaps in the defense. And so after the third inning it was 10:5 for the Reds. In the 5th inning, Yaferson Lopez and Moritz van Bergen each hit their first home runs of the season, which Moritz van Bergen followed with his second one inning later. This much celebrated hit over the fence made it 16:5 and thus the Reds’ immediate victory in the 6th inning via the 10-run rule.

Of the Stuttgart Reds’ impressive 21 hits, Austin Bull alone hit five – with five plate appearances. The American had a perfect day. Moritz Köhler, Jannik Denz and Frido Fink each recorded three hits. In terms of efficiency, Moritz van Bergen and Jannik Denz stood out with four and three runs batted in, respectively, from an overall very homogeneous offense. The “win” for the game went to Eduardo Peluso, who completed his three relief innings to zero.

In the second game, the Reds faced Ryan Bollinger as the Disciples’ starting pitcher, who is back in the Bundesliga after professional years in the USA, Australia and Taiwan. Initially the Reds were successful against his throws. The Stuttgart team countered the guests’ short 3-0 lead with three hits, including a nice double from Moritz Köhler, and took the lead 4-3. This score lasted until the 5th inning. Both Bollinger and Reds starter Robert Blesing did not allow any runs. But then the Disciples only needed three hits in a row, two doubles and a home run to turn the game around: 4:6 The 33-year-old veteran Bollinger gave the Reds the disadvantage time after time. While his Disciples added two more runs, the Reds were only able to get runners on base in the final period without scoring.

Robert Blesing received the “loss” for the game. Moritz van Bergen, who also pitched two innings, and Jannik Denz each had two of the Reds’ six hits.

Next Saturday, May 4, 2024, the Reds have to play a double header at Mainz Athletics. Then the Stuttgart team can play again with Jack Barrie, who was recently suspended – and hopefully also with Yaferson Lopez as a pitcher, who was only used as a designated hitter against Munich-Haar.

The following Thursday, May 9, 2024 (Ascension Day), Hünstetten Storm will be a guest at the TVC Ballpark on Cannstatter Schnarrenberg. These two games are scheduled for 1 and 4:30 p.m. respectively.
