Remembering Ernesto López Robles: The Legacy of ‘El Mostachón’ and ‘Homo Eroticus’

“Chief†, “Güero†, “Boss†, “Ernest†or the nicknames with which Germán Dehesa affectionately called him in his columns: “El Mostachón†and “Homo Eroticus†. Today a gap opens up in FOX Sports that we neither aspire nor want to fill.

Dehesa called Ernesto López Robles “El Mostachón” when remembering that character from Los Polivoces who was “a tireless exploiter, an abuser and a son of the guava” and exercised his power over the poor “Wash and Wear”, like the writer called himself.

We at FOX Sports also lost our “Mostachón”, one of the heads of this project; our pillar, advisor, leader, guide, cloth of tears, boss… our friend is gone.

Graduated in Business Administration and Management at the Universidad Iberoamericana, in 1993 he discovered that his path was journalism when he joined Alejandro Junco de la Vega’s risky adventure that consisted of replicating in Mexico City the successful project he had built in the North. Ernesto became one of the founders of the Reforma Newspaper. There, he consolidated the City and Sports sections, which were later relaunched as Cancha.

With a consolidated and recognized career in print media, which included a postgraduate degree in journalism at Michigan State, our Ernesto decided to change course, thanks to the invitation of Carlos Martínez. With discipline, leadership, dedication, but, above all, love for his work and his people, Ernesto taught us that you don’t need to know about television to break it in television. He managed to consolidate the ambitious project and position FOX Sports as the leading sports channel, to the extent that it was never surpassed by any other sports channel during his management.

Ernesto understood that, to win, it took everyone and he gave everyone the place they deserved. He, on the other hand, always worked behind the scenes. And he did it tirelessly until the last moment of his life, because even outside the offices, we always counted on his advice and support.

Therefore, despite the terrible illness that afflicted him, he dedicated time and soul to leading the transition from FOX Sports to Disney, and then witnessed from a distance the transition from Disney to Lauman.

His impeccable ethics, his commitment as a boss, as a leader, as an advisor and, above all, as a person, confirm precisely that we do not want to fill the gap he leaves. He will always be in our hearts.

Ernest is survived by Ana, his wife; and his children Luis Ernesto and Ana Pau, but we also survive him, who, despite not being blood, are also his family.

Rest in peace, Chief.
