2024 NBA Draft Lottery Results: Winners and Losers

Who was unlucky and for whose benefit? There are already some surprises this year. Here are the winners and losers of this 2024 NBA draft lottery:

Losers

The Detroit Pistons (5th) are undoubtedly the biggest losers of this lottery. They continue their misadventure for a good decade now. Over the last 5 years, the Pistons have had the worst record in the league by far with only 24.5% wins. The margin is the same between them and the team which is 29th as between the latter and the team which is 16th. This year, with 14 wins and 68 losses, the Pistons finished with the worst record in the league and, therefore, the best chances of snatching the first pick in the 2024 draft. And yet, after all these years of misadventure, the Detroit Pistons find themselves once again shortchanged by finishing with only the 5th pick.

Les Charlotte Hornets (6th) do not have as delicate a situation as that of the Pistons. If LaMelo Ball et Mark Williams stay outside the infirmary, not to mention Brandon Miller who finished his rookie season with a good mark, the Hornets have a chance to get their feet back on the ground. We can still find a top player with the 6th pick, but the drop from 3rd to 6th place hurts.

The winners

The San Antonio Spurs (4th), already winners of the first pick of the decade last year with Victor Wembanyama, continue to have the wind in their sails by grabbing 4th place with the 5th best chance percentage. Even if it seems like just a small step for the man. There are years when it can make all the difference, like in 2005 with Chris Paul.

Les Houston Rockets (3rd), who came very close to the play-in this season, have already put together a solid roster with Alperen Şengün, Fred VanVleet, Jalen Green. Even without a non-top 5 draft pick, they could have hoped for a place in the playoffs next season. They finished with a jump of 6 places by landing the 3rd pick in the draft.

The Atlanta Hawks (1st), the big winners of this lottery. Clearly the best lottery heist this year. They went from 10th place with only a 3% chance of drawing the first pick to directly hitting the jackpot. The smile of the Hawks representative says it all.

This is the first time in history that the Atlanta Hawks have won the NBA draft lottery. Moreover, they did it in a more than unexpected way. See you on June 26 and 27 for the 2024 draft, hoping, why not, to see Alexandre Sarr or Zaccharie Risacher become first choice or perhaps even join Victor Wembanyama at the San Antonio Spurs thanks to their 4th choice.
