Rafael Nadal Sets Sights on French Open and Olympic Games in Farewell Season

Rafael Nadal on Wednesday named the French Open and the summer Olympic Games, both in Paris, as big goals in his expected farewell season on the tennis tour.

“Roland Garros will be one of my goals. I would also like to compete at the Olympics. That’s not something I can confirm yet, but I hope it will be something,” said the 37-year-old Spaniard in an interview with the Spanish TV channel La Sexta.

Kampf ums Comeback

The former world number one is currently fighting for his comeback. After a canceled start in Doha, this is scheduled to take place at the Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells in March. Nadal had already had to cancel his start at the Australian Open Grand Slam tournament because of a small tear in a muscle.

He had previously been out for a long time due to a hip injury. The clay court major classic in Paris starts on May 26th, and the fight for the Olympic medals begins in Roland Garros on July 27th.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion, who has triumphed at the French Open 14 times, was recently criticized because he had taken on the role of ambassador for the Saudi Arabian Tennis Association.

“My goal is to promote tennis and try to achieve my goals. I don’t think Arabia needs me to wash its image. It’s not my goal. People tend to express their opinions without questions the world number 646 said. An academy for the Spanish figurehead is to be built in Saudi Arabia.
