Germany continues to play in the top league A, but was only in the third draw pot and therefore faced top-class opponents. The matches begin in September after the home European Championship (June 14th to July 14th), which from a German perspective is outstanding, and the remaining match days are scheduled for October and November. It is possible that Julian Nagelsmann, who followed the draw on site, will no longer be the national coach: his contract only runs until the European Championships.

The newly created quarter-finals of the A-League will take place in March 2025, the Final Four tournament will be played in June next year. England was relegated from the A league as bottom of the group behind Italy, Hungary and Germany. The TICKER of the draw for reading:

+++ Cracker, but doable group for Germany +++

With the Dutch, Nagelsmann and Co. got a top nation, but Hungary and Bosnia from pots 2 and 4 are rather merciful draws.

+++ Who does Germany get? +++

Now it’s decided in favor of Germany: some great tickets are possible from pot 3. Spain or the Netherlands from pot 1? Belgium with coach Domenico Tedesco from pot 2 possibly? Scotland, the opponent from the European Championship group, could once again come from pot 4.

Exciting duels for David Alaba and his Austrians against Haaland and Norway. Relegated England has it a little easier.

+++ It’s slowly getting hot +++

Things are already getting serious in League B for teams like Austria and England. Both are in pot 1 and could face opponents like Erling Haaland and his Norwegians.

+++ These are the groups in League C +++

+++ These are the groups in League D +++

+++ Start with League D +++

The draw will begin with the lowest league. There are only two pots here: 1 with Lithuania or Gibraltar and Moldova (the winner plays in League C) and 2 with Malta, Andorra, San Marino and Liechtenstein.

+++ It’s ready +++

The event in Paris starts with a musical prelude to the Nations League. As usual, the draw will be chaired by UEFA General Secretary Giorgio Marchetti.

+++ In which league does Germany play? +++

National coach Julian Nagelsmann’s team plays in the top league A. But on Thursday they are only in draw pot three. Group duels with Spain, Italy or the Netherlands are therefore possible. But there could also be a comparatively easy group with Croatia, Denmark and Israel.

+++ How important is the Nations League for the DFB? +++

Not a big one at first. Nagelsmann, sports director Rudi Völler and DFB President Bernd Neuendorf are on site in the French capital, but the full focus is on the home European Championship. Völler will quit after that anyway, and Nagelsmann’s contract only runs until the end of the European Championship.

+++ Why is England missing from the top league? +++

The 1966 world champion was relegated from the third edition as bottom of the group behind Italy, Hungary and Germany.

+++ When do the Nations League games take place? +++

The matches start after the European Championships in September. The remaining match days in the group phase will take place in October and November. The newly created quarter-finals of the A-League will take place in March 2025, the Final Four tournament will take place in June next year.

+++ What influence does the Nations League have on qualification for the 2026 World Cup? +++

UEFA has a total of 16 starting places available for the final tournament in the USA, Mexico and Canada. The twelve group winners of the European World Cup qualification (starting in March 2025) are qualified directly. The playoffs are about the remaining four starting places. The second-placed teams in the qualifying groups play there. These twelve nations are joined by the four best group winners in the Nations League who did not make it into the top two in their qualifying groups. The playoffs consist of two knockout rounds, at the end of which four World Cup tickets are awarded.

+++ Where will the Nations League be broadcast? +++

RTL shows half of the German games, the others are split between ARD and ZDF. RTL will also broadcast all games in the final round (from the quarter-finals onwards) without German participation. Group games without that DFB team runs on DAZN.
