Kurt Hamrin, a former Swedish footballer known in particular for playing for Fiorentina between the end of the 1950s and 1960s, has died at the age of 89. Nicknamed “the Bird” for his agility and slender body, he played as a winger and was among the players with the most matches played (400) and the most goals scored (190) in Serie A. As well as in Fiorentina, with whom he played at the height of his popularity between 1958 and 1967, in Italy he also played for shorter periods with Juventus, Padova, Milan and Napoli.

He was also one of the best-known players of the Swedish national team, with whom he scored a total of 16 goals and participated in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. Together with captain Nils Liedholm he contributed to the victories that took Sweden to the final, which they then lost 5-2 against the Brazil of Pelé, Vavá and Zagallo.
