Former French International Sabri Lamouchi Was Ready to Coach OM, But Was Not Contacted to Replace Gattuso

According to Daniel Riolo, OM contacted Sabri Lamouchi to sit on their bench last September after the departure of Marcelino. But the former French international was not approached to replace the Italian this week, which he would have accepted.

Free since the end of his adventure with Cardiff City, Sabri Lamouchi (52) was ready to play firefighters for OM. According to Daniel Riolo, RMC Sport journalist, the former French international (12 caps, 1 goal) would have been willing to take over from Gennaro Gattuso until the end of the season, after his departure was made official on Tuesday. But the former Rennes coach was not contacted by his former club (he played there between 2005 and 2006), he explained to Daniel Riolo, RMC Sport journalist.

Contacted by Tessier, not by Longoria

“I said: ‘never in my life will Sabri Lamouchi accept for four months (to coach OM) knowing that he is not going to stay,” explained Daniel Riolo on Tuesday in After Foot. “I had him today and he told me: ‘of course I would have accepted for lots of reasons. But they didn’t contact me. On the other hand, they contacted me before Gattuso arrived ( appointed September 27, 2023).’ He was not chosen. And it was Tessier who contacted him, not Longoria. Tessier (general manager of the club) therefore contacted Lamouchi at the end of September when Marcelino left and finally Longoria (president of OM ) preferred to take Gattuso.”

To compensate for Gattuso’s departure, OM chose Jean-Louis Gasset, appointed until the end of the season. The 70-year-old technician was presented to the press on Tuesday and will direct his first match on Thursday against Shakhtar Donetsk in the second leg of the Europa League.

“I saw the group with the president and I said why I was there,” he said. “I said what I had achieved with less strong groups. Mentality is 80% of performance. I said that everyone had to do a little bit more, says Jean-Louis Gasset to his players . Everyone look at themselves in the mirror. When you concede goals like the ones Marseille concede, they are individual errors and the system is not the cause. It is a mental problem when you concede goals after the 90th minute .”
