The Western Conference finals will feature the Vegas Golden Knights. As of Wednesday, the Stars (35-17-9) had the same number of points as the Central Division-leading Winnipeg Jets, but had played four additional games. Additionally, the Stars were trailing the Vancouver Canucks by four points for the most points in the NHL.
According to the Stars, the stipulations for the 2026 third-round pick are such that the Flames will only receive it if the Stars make it to this year’s Stanley Cup Final. However, if the Stars do not reach the Final, no extra pick will be transferred from Dallas to Calgary.

The Devils were granted the Stars’ fourth-round selection for the 2026 draft in exchange for acting as an intermediary and keeping 50% of Tanev’s salary.
In December, Zadorov was transferred to the Canucks. During the All-Star break in late January, the Flames traded Lindholm to the Canucks.
The team has recently traded away Tanev, and it is expected that they may also part ways with Hanifin in order to stay competitive for the final Western Conference wild-card spot. The Flames (29-25-2) are currently five points behind the Nashville Predators for the last wild-card spot, but with their recent success of four consecutive wins and eight out of their last 11 games.
On Wednesday, the Dallas Stars acquired defenseman Chris Tanev through a three-team trade involving the Calgary Flames and the New Jersey Devils to fulfill their biggest need.
Dallas was one of the teams thought to be interested in Tanev, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the NHL trade deadline on March 8. The Stars had a top defensive duo composed of Thomas Harley and Miro Heiskanen, with Heiskanen playing on the right side despite being a left-handed shot.
The Flames have reached a critical point as they say goodbye to Tanev. With several players, including Tanev, Lindholm, Hanifin, and Zadorov, becoming unrestricted free agents, the team needed to make decisions about their roster at the start of the season.
