VIDEO. “This is sour”: top favorite Andy Baetens (after painful moment) quickly eliminated again at Q-School darts

For the time being, things won’t work out for Andy Baetens in the battle for a coveted tour card. ‘The Beast’ lost in the first round on day two.

The semi-pro world champion has come to Kalkar, Germany, as one of the men to beat. In the first phase, he qualified for the final phase after the second day, which will take place from January 11 to 14. Seventeen tour tickets will be handed out this week in the European Q-School (fourteen in the British one). The assignment is simple: win one of the four match days or finish among the best thirteen on the rankings after four days.

However, on the first day Baetens was eliminated in the second round. On Friday, the East Flemish team fared even worse in terms of results. In the first round the German Michael Unterbuchner proved to be too strong. Baetens came back from 3-5 down to 5-5, but then missed double 4 and double 2 for the match. With his second match arrow, Baetens also thought he had hit the target… However, he then saw his opponent finish it on double 20 for 5-6. Baetens threw an average of 85.48, but missed the doubles. He hit only 5 of 19, good for 26 percent.

Baetens is therefore stuck at 0 points in the standings. Darts players only receive a point if they win from the second round onwards, one more per match won. For example, Mario Vandenbogaerde scored 4 points on the first day with a place in the semi-finals. Immediately a giant step towards a new tour card, because it is assumed that 6 to 7 points will be enough to finish in the top thirteen. Last year, the lowest ranked player (number 10 at the time) who earned a tour card for the Pro Tour needed 7 points.

Baetens still has two days to straighten everything out. He can also simply win a match day, then he is immediately assured of a ticket for the ‘first class’ of darts. After his world title with the WDF, that was his biggest goal. He missed a tour card the past two years. Last year Baetens threw the highest average of all participants with 95. “There are still two days, but things are a bit sour now,” says friend Stefanie.
