Changes to French Championships Formula Met With Criticism as Participation Numbers Decline

The formula of the French championships has changed and Fos-sur-Mer, scene of the 2024 edition from Friday to Sunday, is preparing to wipe away the plaster of a criticized reform which has significantly reduced participation.

The five tables will thus be limited to the twelve players or doubles best placed in the weekly points ranking. The Thursday qualifications have disappeared and the four seeds in each of the five tables, directly admitted to the quarters, will only have to win one match to secure a medal.

Admitting “not recognizing herself in the new formula”, Camblysian Delphine Delrue, partner of Mulhouseian Thom Gicquel in mixed, decided to boycott the meeting. The five-time champions of France

, 13th in the world and on the way to the Paris Games, will not defend their title. Without Gicquel, the Alsatian delegation will therefore be limited to nine players, compared to 17 in 2023.
