Bopanna and Ebden Claim Victory in Melbourne Doubles Final

Saturday in Melbourne, in the final of this first round of the Grand Slam, they made sporting logic speak by getting the better of the Italians Simone Bolelli (ATP 56), 38 years old, and Andrea Vavassori (ATP 45), 28 years old, who were playing their first final in a major tournament. The pair, ranked 2nd seed, won in two sets 7-6 (7/0) and 7-5. The final lasted 1h39.

Bopanna/Ebden win their first Grand Slam title together. In Melbourne, they succeed the Australians Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler. The Indian-Australian duo lost in the final of the last US Open, after reaching the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2023.

Ebden lost the Australian final in 2022 associated with his compatriot Max Purcell. He won the final at Wimbledon the same year with Purcell.

Bopanna played and lost a first Grand Slam final at the US Open in 2010 with Pakistani Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi. He was playing his 61st Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne.

In the ATP doubles rankings, Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden will become world number 1 and number 2 respectively on Monday.
