Dominant Voyageurs Extend Winning Streak with Big Victory Over Alouettes

Three innings of four points made the difference in this second one-sided duel. The Voyageurs (2-0) defeated the Alouettes (2-3), limited to three hits and victims of as many errors.

“The whole lineup hit, we still had 13 hits, defensively we did the job and our pitchers were good. They too (the Alouettes) filled the goals a few times, but we were able to make some big plays,” summed up the Voyageurs head coach, Jérémie Chalifour, on the other end of the phone. who could not detect any negative points after these first two matches of the calendar.

“I don’t know if I’m surprised, I knew we were extremely prepared, having put a lot of emphasis on details during training camp,” he noted. Even in the preparatory matches, we looked really ready, maybe a little more than the other teams. We know it won’t always go well, but we know we’re ready. We’ll see how long it lasts, but for the moment, there’s nothing negative to say.”

In control when leaving

The recipe was quite similar to Saturday for the Quebec Junior Elite Baseball League (LBJEQ) team, which took a 4-0 lead in its second round at bat. Nothing too spectacular, but oh so effective. With the bases loaded, Hugo Landry, Mathieu Vachon and Marc-Alexandre Guérin took turns hitting a single good for a point.

The locals were able to get two outs, but Jean-Simon Simard-Gagnon produced the last point of the inning, also thanks to a single.

“A guy like Hugo Landry, who didn’t play on Saturday, had a big three-hit game,” Chalifour said. The guys want to play, they can’t wait to get on the field and when they get their chance, they get the job done. All the credit goes to them, they are efficient in their game.

The Voyageurs filled the trails again in the third, which allowed them to add another point when Nathan Morency was hit. Coming to run in place of Alexandre Munger, also hit by a pitch, and for a second time in his case, Thomas Otis crossed home plate while walking.

Since you don’t change a winning formula, Jonquière once again placed a runner on all cushions in the fourth inning. And believe it or not, Munger was hit in a third straight shift.

The Alouettes paid cash, in addition to being undermined by errors. Hugo Landry produced his second and third runs of the evening on a single, then Marc-Alexandre Guérin scored two teammates. During the sequence, an error was recorded by the Charlesbourg third baseman.

On the mound, young Alexandre Dionne skillfully negotiated the first three innings, in his first start in the regular season with the Voyageurs. The native of Saint-Honoré had obtained the first nine outs of the evening while facing only 11 batters.

It got slightly complicated in the bottom of the fourth, when he gave up a single, reached a batter and allowed a walk after an out. Alexis Simard was called in relief, which ended the threat.

Jérémie Chalifour explained his decision to withdraw young Dionne, aged 18, without too much delay.

“His pitch count was still quite low so we decided to send him back to fourth, but we didn’t want to stretch him either,” he argued. We haven’t played a lot of games yet since the start of the season, so the plan was to start three guys in relief.”

In three and a third innings, Alexandre Dionne allowed three walks and two hits, along with a strikeout. Alexis Simard, Derek Larouche and Mathieu Vachon then took turns on the mound. It was the latter who obtained the last three outs, making the Alouettes hitters cut through the air.

Munger hits… three times

As if that wasn’t enough, what did the Voyageurs do in the seventh inning, in their last turn at bat? They filled the goals, of course. Four more runs followed, including one produced by Alexandre Munger, who finally had a chance to hit a ball. Rather rare, the veteran will have been hit three times in this meeting, in addition to obtaining a free pass.

“He was facing a lefty who was trying to throw a curve against him, but the ball hit him in the middle of the back. We almost laughed about it, confided Jérémie Chalifour. At the same time, it was another way to get on base and these are things that happen in baseball.

The Voyageurs begin a busy weekend with four games in three days on the road. It starts Friday evening in Gatineau, against the Tyrans. The two teams will meet again the next afternoon, before the Saguenay team travels to Saint-Eustache for a doubleheader against the Bisons on Sunday.

Young Jacob Laurin should get the start on Friday.
