An incendiary confession

A documentary on the Prime Video platform has found the man who claims to be the author of the fire in the Windsor building in Madrid, the skyscraper that burned down in 2005 until it was reduced to ashes. Nineteen years later, a mercenary of crime like Jon Imanol Sapieha, known as El Sapo, has confessed that he caused the fire after receiving the task of making a folder disappear from one of the offices. He has done it in the second season of El Sapo SA: memoirs of a thief. In the first season, the man explained how he had stolen Esther Koplowitz’s artwork, taken the loot from Yecla’s bank safe, and in 2008 led the operation to free the Alakrana fishing crew kidnapped by Somali pirates. It has now been blamed for the fire for which police never found the culprit. In fact, there has always been debate about the causes. Some of those involved in the investigation considered that it was accidental, the result of a poorly extinguished cigarette. But, on the other hand, the importance of some of the companies that had their headquarters in the Windsor and the political relevance of some documents made the hypothesis of premeditation appear. The case, on top of that, had added mystery because, with the building on fire, the shadows of some people who were still inside the offices were detected in the windows. A El Sapo SA., Jon Imanol Sapieha, has many of the answers that were never discovered.

The viewer curious about the case can go directly to the second season of the series because they are independent stories. It may be convenient, however, that you look at the first few minutes of the opening chapter of the saga to understand the curriculum and temperament of the Toad. You may need to put subtitles on because the protagonist is a bit difficult to understand at times.

Sapo’s version of his authorship is the guiding thread of the documentary, but each of his explanations is contrasted with the interventions of people linked to the investigation: police, firefighters, security guards, architects, insurance managers… Therefore, the viewer can assess the solidity of the mercenary’s explanations. Almost a year ago, the HBO Max platform premiered the documentary series The Curse of Windsor, where an attempt was made to investigate the case. In a way, the premiere of this second season ofEl Sapo SA complements the story.

The crime of burning the Windsor would have been time-barred. But, even so, it is a little difficult to understand the reason that leads El Sapo to make this revelation now. Beyond attributing the authorship to himself, he does not explain who commissioned him, or which documents were involved, or from which office he stole them. Therefore, the decisive information remains a mystery. Therefore, it is inevitable to think if El Sapo is self-incriminating a crime for reasons of notoriety and ego. His psychopathic personality could justify it. And that his incendiary confession is nothing more than a timely smokescreen to sell us another season of the series.
