Latvian Basketball Player Rihards Lomažs Signs with Italian Team Bologna “Virtus”

Latvian basketball player Rihards Lomažs has joined the Italian team Bologna “Virtus” led by Lukas Banki, the club announced on Friday.

“Lomaž is the new player of “Virtus”, according to a post on the club’s website.

“Virtus” reports that the agreement with Lomaž has been reached until June 30, 2024.

With nine wins in 13 games, “Virtus” occupies the third place in the Italian Serie A, while the Bologna team of the Euroleague ranks third with a record of 12-5.

The 27-year-old defender Lomaž has been treating a knee cruciate ligament injury since January, which prevented him from participating in the World Cup finals. At the beginning of the season, he was without a club, only participating in one test match as part of “Ventspils”, but in October he joined the Turkish team Denizli “Yukatel Merkezefendi”, in whose ranks, in 12 games, the defender has scored an average of 14.7 points in 34.7 minutes, won 2.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

At the beginning of the previous season, Lomaž represented the Spanish club “Casademont” of Zaragoza, but in the fall, before the national team break, the two sides parted ways, as the Latvian moved to the German Bundesliga team Oldenburg EWE. In the ACB league, he averaged 6.2 points and collected 1.2 assists in five matches in 20 minutes per game, while in the Bundesliga, the Latvian averaged 9.1 points and collected 3.3 assists in nine matches in 20 minutes per game.

The season before that, the Latvian basketball player played in the Turkish championship, representing the Denizli “Yukatel Merkezefendi” team. Before that, since 2019, Lomaž represented the French club ASVEL of Villers-Bains, which plays in the ULEB Euroleague, but before joining the Turkish club in 2021, he spent half the season in the German team “Gottingen”.

Before becoming a legionnaire, Lomažs played for Latvian club “Ventspils” for four seasons, becoming the national champion in 2018, and a year later winning the Latvian-Estonian Basketball League. Before that, Lomaž developed his skills in the Ventspils “Spars” team, and also played in Jelgava and Jūrmala units in the strongest league in Latvia.
