Darmstadt 98: Chaos as Manager Abruptly Fired Before New Year’s Eve

It’s already banging here two days before New Year’s Eve!

Darmstadt 98 suddenly finds itself without a manager. The Bundesliga newcomer has separated from previous sports boss Carsten Wehlmann (51) with immediate effect. In doing so, the Darmstadt-based company is reacting to the notice of termination submitted by Wehlmann immediately beforehand as of March 31, 2024.

Under these circumstances, the bottom of the Bundesliga no longer saw any basis for cooperation and fired Wehlmann on the spot!

“Due to the high importance of the position and the obvious assumption that Carsten Wehlmann will take another job on April 1st, we cannot afford a lame-duck situation. We are playing in the Bundesliga and will do everything in our power to keep it going for another year. For this we need 100 percent commitment from every person,” explains Lilien President Rüdiger Fritsch (62), noticeably annoyed.

Three days before the start of the transfer window and thus Darmstadt’s last chance to react against the impending relegation with personnel this season, the Lilies no longer have a sports boss because he had apparently already finished with the Lilies. It is still unclear which job Wehlmann will take up.

Wehlmann’s position will be taken over on an interim basis by coach Torsten Lieberknecht (50), team manager Michael Stegmayer (38) and board member Tom Eilers (53).
