10 years of silence and mystery after Michael Schumacher’s (almost) fatal accident

Today marks 10 years of secrets, enigmas, intrigues, secrets, half-truths, lies, assumptions, uncertainties, concealments, in reality, of silence and mystery. That, silence and mystery.

Today, Friday, December 29, 2023, marks 10 years since the accident of the seven-time F-1 world champion (1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 20004), the German Michael Schumacherwhich, next Wednesday, will fulfill 54 yearswho crashed against some rocks hidden by the fine snow that day, when he was skiing with his son Mick and a friend of his, on a slope near one of his residences, the one he owned in the Méribel resort, which is part of the complex of The Three Valleys, one of the most renowned ski centers in the French Alps.

Schumacher was a great skier. As a driver he raced 307 grand prix in 19 seasons in F-1, reaching the podium in half of them (155), winning 91 races and traveling 81,208 kilometers in an F-1. Despite being so skilled with skis and his sticks, ‘Schumi’ lost control when he was crossing from one piste to another looking for the best one (it is not true that he was skiing ‘off piste’, as was published after the accident) and had Bad luck that his head crashed into a hidden rock.

That was not his worst luck. His worst luck was that, as is common for skiers (something that real experts do not recommend), Schumacher skied with a GoPro camera embedded in his helmet to record his day in the snow. When it crashed, the camera seriously damaged part of his brain, causing the worst damage. It is still macabre and, of course, part of the secrets and mysteries that began to circulate from that December 29 until this Friday, December 29, that the recording of that camera was the key piece to investigate the accident of the seven-time champion.

The irreversible injuries suffered by the ‘Kaiser’ were apparently caused by the GoPro camera, which he was wearing in his helmet and which, when colliding with a rock, stuck in his brain.

When we talk about 10 years of mystery and silence it is because, although it may seem like a lie, although it seems impossible to us, from that day on nothing more serious, truthful, authentic, certain about the state of health, life has been known. If he has it, from a man who has been hiding for, that is, 10 years, because the word ‘kidnapped’ would not be correct, as he is always under the protection of his family and, at most, three or four close friends, like, for example, the Frenchman Jean Todt, former head of Ferrari and former president of the FIA and, of course, the former German journalist Sabine Kahm, who is, along with Corinna Betsch, wife of ‘Schumi’ since 1995 and mother of Ginna Maria and Mick, the one that has prevented, no one knows how or to what extent, from preventing anything, absolutely nothing, from being known about the state, vegetative, without a doubt, of the German champion.

For many of the F-1 experts consulted by El Periódico, it is truly mysterious how it is possible that, for 10 years, not a single authentic piece of information about Schumacher’s condition has escaped and, of course, not in a newspaper or magazine. But even in the feared, crazy, free and open social networks we have been able to see an image, if not of the pilot himself in his bed, yes, at least, of the immense and sophisticated ICU that they have built for him in his mansion in Gland, small town near Geneva, where 15 professionals, including doctors, physios, rehabilitators and other specialists treat him daily under the coordination of Dr. Richard Frackowiak, with an approximate weekly cost of 148,000 euros, which represents 30 million euros from the 2013.

“I miss Michael every day; he is here, different, but he is here. Every day he shows me how strong he is”

Corinna Betsch

Kahm does not speak to anyone and, when he does, it is to win a lawsuit against the German magazine that, in 2015, published that Michael was already walking or to, as has happened recently, request an immediate rectification from the skillful, daring and incorrect journalist German who invented an interview with Schumacher with answers provided by Artificial Intelligence, the latest of many scandals experienced during this decade. The magazine was ‘Die Aktuelle’ and its editor-in-chief was immediately fired.

If Kahm does not speak and Corinna has limited herself to commenting, in the Netflix special ‘Schumacher’, that “I miss Michael every day; “He is here, different, but he is here, because every day he shows me how strong he is,” it is evident that the only rigorous voice is Todt, who, despite the fact that in his day he confessed that he had seen some Grand Prix of F-1 next to the seven-time champion, his last words were: “Mick is here, so I don’t miss him, but he is no longer the Mick he used to be.”

It is evident that there have been close friends who have said theirs, especially in recent days, as this sad anniversary approached. But they are protagonists who do not have direct information about the state of the seven-time champion, started by his brother Ralf, whose favorite phrase is “my heart smiles every time I see Gina Maria and Mick.” Or Piero Ferrari: “I don’t like it when they talk about Michael as if he had died.” Or his former manager Willi Webber: “I have no hope of seeing him again.” Also, also, the colorful and talkative Eddie Jordan, the first boss that the ‘Kaiser’ had in F-1: “Michael is missing.” Or the thousands and thousands of messages that his followers leave in the ‘Keep Fighting’ group.

One thing is clear, the Schumacher family has done everything possible and impossible to ensure that no one has access to the driver or even to know how and what condition he is in. The true protector of ‘Schumi’ has been Sabine Kahm, who has even caused seas of tears in two of Michael’s close friends such as (were) the former Ferrari pilot Luca Badoer and, most especially, ‘la mamma’, who is what Schumacher called Rossella, the cook at ‘Montana’, the restaurant in Maranello, close to the Fiorano track, where the ‘prancing horse’ drivers train.

“Do not expect anything from us today, on this tenth anniversary. There will be no news”

Felix Dam

Schumacher family lawyer

This secrecy, which turns this decade into the decade of mystery and silence, has logically generated all kinds of rumors and stories, some of them, if not all, truly incredible since that ‘paparazzi’ who disguised himself as a priest for trying to enter Michael’s room in the first hospital in Grenoble where he was taken on the day of the accident until the most recent, published 24 hours ago by the popular and noisy German ‘Bild’, which claims that the seven-time champion was loaded into a Mercedes AMG, which reached over 300 km/h, with the sound of F-1, to try to stimulate ‘Schumi’s’ brain.

There are those who now remember the text that appeared on the invitation to Corinna and Michael’s wedding: “Separately, we are just words; together, a poem.” It is evident that the Schumacher family, Corinna, her children and Sabine Kahm, have every right in the world to keep the former F-1 champion alive, even if it is totally expressionless.

Many now remember the text of the invitation to Michael and Corinna’s wedding in 1995: “Separately, we are just words; together, a poem.”

What’s more, waiting, perhaps, for the medicine to give Michael the possibility of recovering in some way, the Schumachers are spending part of their fortune, valued at 500 million euros. Of course, both Michael and Corinna and their financial advisors have been able to maintain and make large investments, many of which they have been able to make with the sale of some of their most appreciated assets such as their cabin in the mountains of Norway, their Rolls Royce. Phantom’, the Ferrari F-2001, with which he won in Monaco in 2001 or his private plane, a beautiful Falcon 2000 EX, valued at more than 20 million euros.

And, 10 years ago today, the Schumacher world, which was a pleasant world, happy like few others, rich like some, exciting, alive, began to become a world full of mystery and silence, a lot of silence. Just silence. His brother Ralf said it a few days ago: “Michael was very lucky during his successful life in F-1, but then this tragic accident occurred.” And silence came, hell, pure uncertainty. As Felix Damm, lawyer for the Schumacher family, pointed out yesterday, “don’t expect anything from us on this anniversary: there will be no news.”
