Sporting, optimistic with the candidacy of El Molinón after its meeting with the Principality: “Asturias has great options to host the World Cup”

“I think that Asturias’ candidacy has great options to host the World Cup.” David Guerra, executive president of Sporting de Gijón, showed this afternoon his confidence in the candidacy for El Molinón to be one of the venues for the 2030 World Cup, a few moments after the meeting that Sporting had this afternoon with the president of the Principality of Asturias , Adrián Barbón. The Deputy Minister of Culture, Language Policy and Sports, Vanessa Gutiérrez, was also present at the “informative” meeting.

How did the meeting go? “The conversations have been very positive. We have come to continue the contacts we have had with public institutions. The candidacy is more alive than ever, we are stronger, and we are alienated. Thank Adrián Barbón and the Principality; and receptivity to the project. There is a will to move the project forward for the good of Gijón, Oviedo and all of Asturias”

What has been treated? “What we have done basically is know the status of the meetings, to strengthen the path and that is what we want to transfer protocol. “Now is the time for a clear and resounding way to move in the right direction.”

Protocol. “First is to establish ourselves among the three fundamental actors to continue developing this protocol. When it is ready, the bases must be presented to The Federation. Understanding that time is short, and that the Federation and the CSD are going to make decisions regarding the venues shortly. Understanding that in December FIFA is going to publish the requirements to be a host. “We are entering a final phase in which we are aligning speaking the same language.”

December 4: FIFA announces requirements. “What we are going to continue working on. All venues will have to see if they comply or adapt. I have felt political will.

What has the Principality transferred? “It tells us that it is a great opportunity for Asturias. It is the fundamental basis to build and see how we articulate it so that it can become a reality”

What have you asked for? “We have not come to demand anything. In this public-private collaboration, how are they able to contribute. Give us a positive feeling. We are more established. We feel stronger, aligned and consolidated”

Subsidence “It has been on the table from day one because this is Asturias. The sub-headquarters are not there yet. Camps and training were discussed. We are clubs from Asturias. Dizziness. How is it all going to be distributed? It will be for Oviedo, Avilés, for all of Asturias”

Project status. “We have to adjust to the budget parameters that we establish. We heard public administrations that wanted a more resized project that would preserve one of the attributes we share, the oldest field. With those parameters of ‘budget or location, we are developing the project and we are in final details.

Is it viable to raise 150 million? “The work we have to do now is to reach 150 million. But we are convinced that we are capable of getting there”

What are the steps to take now? “The first thing we have to do is understand what this protocol is going to be like. We have a very tight schedule, the venues will be decided by February. We all have to step on the accelerator”

World Cup options. “All the options. What’s more, I think that Asturias’ candidacy has great options to host the World Cup: the oldest Spanish football stadium, because Asturias deserves it and represents football and development like no one else. Spain, the Asturians have expressed that they want , because we have political and institutional will, ‘because we have the desire, and because all the conversations call us that way. We have the same options as the rest. Now we are aligned.’
