Melilla Sports Press Association Begins Electoral Period for New President and Board of Directors

The Melilla Sports Press Association (APDM) begins its electoral period this Wednesday, May 1, for the election of a new president and board of directors, after six consecutive terms of the current president, Perpetuo Avelino Gutiérrez Pérez, who announced his decision to resign. not seek re-election during the Great Sports Gala on April 19, an event organized by the group of sports journalists from Melilla.

Avelino Gutiérrez Pérez will not run for reelection after 24 years leading the group of sports journalists in Melilla.

Avelino Gutiérrez’s extensive career includes his time as delegate correspondent of Agencia EFE in Melilla, from 1975 to 1999, editor of El Telegrama de Melilla and correspondent for El Pais, Diario 16, El Noticiero Nacional of Barcelona and Diario Sur, of 1984 to 2004.

The still president of the APDM highlights that “it is time to end his time” in the Melilla Sports Press Association, “with more than thirty years in the front row and the time has come to rest.”

However, he highlights that in the APDM “there are very valid people who will lead the association to another three decades of being in the front row as it has been until now.”

In this sense, it was announced that Antonio García, head of sports at Televisión Melilla, will run for the presidency. “For years he has been at my side, first as general secretary and then as vice president. I know his worth and the APDM can be proud to remain in good hands.”

The call is carried out by statutory mandate, in accordance with the provisions of article 30, chapter IV, which indicates that “they will be elected in an assembly to be held before or immediately after the celebration of the summer Olympic games.”

The previous elections took place in the month of April 2021 and in them President Avelino Gutiérrez was re-elected, thereby fulfilling a sixth consecutive term that ends with the call of these new elections and that will not be repeated, after Gutiérrez announced that he will not stand for a new re-election.

The APDM is made up of a total of forty-two members, of which twenty-eight are permanent members, ten collaborators and the remaining six honorary members.

Election calendar

The electoral calendar by which the electoral process for the presidency of the Melilla Sports Press Association will be carried out for the four-year period 2024-2028, in accordance with the current Statutes, is as follows:

May 1. – Appointment of the Electoral Commission, made up of Laureano Valladolid Perona, as the oldest associate, as president, and Carlos Rodríguez, the youngest associate, as secretary, assisted by the general secretary of the entity, Fausto Mas Fernández.

May 5.- Opening of the deadline for submitting candidates for the presidency of the APDM.

May 15.- Closing of the deadline for submitting candidatures.

May 20.- Official proclamation of the valid candidacies for the election of the new president of the APDM, although if there is only one valid candidacy it will be proclaimed for the period 2024-2028.

May 24.- In the case of more than one candidate, the vote will proceed with the oldest congressman as president of the electoral table and the youngest as secretary, designated from among the members present.
