Where are the Ludwigsburg giants heading? The game against one of the biggest names in German basketball, Alba Berlin, on Sunday evening should provide an indication of this. After a stuttering start to the season, the basket hunters from the baroque city had recently recovered and won three of the last four Bundesliga games – with another win against the third-place team in the table.

Ludwigsburg deservedly won 87:79 in the sold-out MHP Arena. The Giants had already led by 13 points at halftime (47:34) and expected the Berliners to improve their performance after the break. They still couldn’t prevent a run, and the game was open for a long time in the final quarter. At Alba, ex-Ludwigsburg and world champion Johannes Thiemann, who is the absolute leader after a change in the summer and many departures, stood out. The 29-year-old achieved a new personal best with 29 points. In the end, 20 ball losses by his teammates were too many. “It’s hard to win a game like that,” said Thiemann.

For Josh King’s team, builder Desure Buie held the ball in his hands in the crucial moments – and made the right decisions. The American was the hosts’ best scorer with 25 points. It didn’t matter that Yorman Polas Bartolo was disqualified in the third quarter because he accidentally stepped on Thiemann, who was lying on the ground.

The giants don’t have time to celebrate. An English week is coming up for them – if you like. The catch-up game away against BG Göttingen will take place on Tuesday evening (8 p.m.).
