Just a week ago he won his seventh ATP Finals title, surpassing Roger Federer. He certified Number One this season and on November 20 he completed 400 weeks as leader of the world ranking. He has won seven titles this year. But Novak Djokovic’s ambition always goes further. When they asked him how he could improve his season after conquering the Nitto in Turin, he was forceful: “I can win four Grand Slams and Olympic gold.” A milestone that could occur in 2024, with the celebration of the Paris Olympic Games. This year he has come close, lifting three of the four majors.

The end of Novak’s season has not gone entirely as the Serbian wanted. To top off his year in style, Nole wanted to win the Davis Cup with his nation for the second time, just as they did in 2010. However, facing Jannik Sinner for the third time, in just two weeks, has past bill. In the group stage in Turin, the Italian took the victory, for which the Serbian wanted to compensate in the final of the same tournament. They met again in the individual semifinals of the Davis Cup, after Nole dedicated a few words to him in Turin: “I understand the expectation that there is in Italy around him. He will be number 1 in the world and will win Grand Slam tournaments.” He was not on the wrong track, Sinner did something unique and complicated on Saturday against Djokovic: saving three match points to give his country the victory.

With Djokovic’s defeat, his first singles defeat in this competition since 2011, when he was forced to retire injured against the Argentine Juan Martín del Potro, the ticket to the final had to be decided in the doubles match. The Serbian teamed up with his compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic, while Sinner was paired with Lorenzo Sonego, who were guilty of leaving Serbia without options and ending Djokovic’s dream. “When you lose playing for your country, the feeling of bitterness is even greater. This is difficult to accept. Throughout the season, this week was in my thoughts,” confessed the Serbian after the defeat that put an end to the dream of taking his nation to the top in this Davis Cup.

While it is true that the culmination of the season has not been the one desired by the king of the ATP ranking throne, Djokovic’s numbers do not leave anyone indifferent. His hunger does not stop and the nickname “record man” fits him like a glove. “I always have higher ambitions and goals,” Nole said after his victory in Turin. He has managed to win seven ATP titles this season, in addition to the award for finishing the year on top.

Adelaide International 1. Djokovic opened the year by beating Sebastian Korda 6-7(8), 7-6(3) and 6-4 in 3 hours and 9 minutes, in the first tournament of the season. With the victory, he equaled Rafa Nadal as the fourth tennis player with the most ATP titles won (92). Ahead, Ivan Lendl (94), Roger Federer (103) and Jimmy Connors (109).

Australian Open. The first Grand Slam of the year, which the Serbian won for the tenth time. With the victory in Melbourne he raised his 22nd major, thus equaling Rafa Nadal, who held the record.

Roland Garros. Second major tournament of 2023 and the second of the year for the Serbian, the third on the Parisian clay (2016, 2021 and 2023) and a triumph that took him to the historical peak of tennis: he became the tennis player with the most Grand Slams in the history. The most successful player of all time was the first to win each Grand Slam at least three times, and the oldest champion in Paris.
