Mannheim. The 46th Wolfgang Welz tournament is international again. After the Corona break and the limited registration numbers last year, the best German judoka from the U20 will meet competition from Ukraine, Greece and the Netherlands this Saturday in the Lilli-Gräber-Halle in Friedrichsfeld.

For the German fighters in seven weight classes and for the young men in eight weight classes, the traditional tournament is also a viewing under the eyes of national trainers Andreas Tölzer (M) and Lorenz Trautmann (F). “Both of them attached great importance to the fact that foreign countries were involved again,” says Marco Welz, the son of the namesake and the sporting director of the organizer 1. Mannheimer Judoclub.
Papa Welz excited about son Lion
His 18-year-old son Lion Welz, who is only in his third year of intensive judo training, will be there for the second time. “He has what it takes to win a few fights in the class up to 73 kilograms, then we’ll see…” says the father about the good atmosphere that always prevails in the Lilli-Gräber-Halle.
