Members of the environmental group Just Stop Oil, the three guilty of “aggravated trespass” were sentenced, among other things, to community service.

Three members of the environmental group Just Stop Oil were sentenced to community service on Tuesday after briefly interrupting a cricket match in late June in London. Found guilty of “aggravated trespass” a month ago by a London court, these three activists – two men aged 21 and 27 and a 69-year-old woman – were sentenced to 60 hours of community service and a banned for one year from going to Lord’s Cricket Ground, the temple of discipline.

During a match between England and Australia, two activists entered the field and threw orange powder. One of them had been carried off the pitch by one of the players, England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow. A third was prevented from entering the field.

Of the “selfish and guerrilla tactics” according to the British Prime Minister

The Just Stop Oil group, accustomed to punchy actions of this kind, is calling for a ban on any new gas or oil projects in the United Kingdom. Several of its activists have already been sentenced by the courts, including prison sentences.

This action by Just Stop Oil was condemned by Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, a cricket fan. His spokesperson had denounced “selfish and guerrilla tactics aimed at events that bring joy to millions of people”.

His government promised at the end of July “hundreds” new oil and gas exploration and exploitation licenses in the North Sea, provoking indignation from environmental organizations.

Last month, Rishi Sunak announced the postponement of several key measures of the UK’s climate policy.
