VEENENDAAL – Last week, Saturday April 20, Delft resident Axel van Nieuwenhuyse from BC Delft became National Champion during the National Para Badminton Championships in Veenendaal. He won his men’s singles title in the B category for standing players.

For the past year, badminton club BC Delft has also been offering para-badminton in addition to its regular badminton activities. Parabadminton is badminton for athletes with a physical or mild intellectual disability. “We now have a small and close-knit group. Over the past year, some of these badminton players have joined our regular badminton groups. A great step for them and the inclusion that we as a club find important,” said chairman Paul van der Knaap. Last Saturday, Axel van Nieuwenhuyse managed to achieve a special success in Veenendaal. His Delft clubmate Erik Jan Koekoek won silver in the men’s singles B for players who use a wheelchair. Their non-Delft teammates also went home with medals of honor.

New players
According to the chairman, there is certainly room for new players at BC Delft: “We have room for new players. The ages of athletes range from teenagers to people over 60. They play standing or in a wheelchair and we look at the possibilities and wishes of each player. Although everyone is welcome at BC Delft, we impose a number of conditions on participants. This is to keep it feasible and fun for the supervisors and other athletes. A player must therefore be able to independently carry out an assignment, learn the rules of the game and may not exhibit aggressive behavior.”
