The Rise and Fall of Latina and Monopoli: A Nail-Biting Match and Coaching Mistakes

Since 1992 he has been a collaborator of “Il Messaggero”, since 2009 he has collaborated with the “Gazzetta dello Sport”. He starts out writing about baseball, then gives in to the tentacles of football.

The match between Latina and Monopoli will be remembered for its ending marked by Starita’s brace which allowed the Apulians to recover from 3-0 to 3-2 and gave a surplus of anxiety to the Nerazzurri fans. Mindful of the experience he had on the Arezzo bench, when he was denied access to the play-offs in favor of Cesena due to just one goal in goal difference, Di Donato on Sunday evening expressed all his anger at the superficiality with which the his boys risked ruining an otherwise excellent performance. But as he himself admitted, the first to relax was Di Donato himself who, with the score at 3-1 and 3′ from the end of regulation time, recalled Di Livio, the best player, to the bench. Without Di Livio the team lost further balance and above all the substitution was interpreted as a signal that the match was now at its epilogue. Add to this the unhappy evening in Ercolano who first caused a penalty by intervening on the former Peschetola and then, together with Di Renzo, was caught like an amateur by Starita, certainly not the latest arrival.

Even before the end, however, Latina took a risk at the start and this is a circumstance that must be evaluated. In the first 20 minutes Starita and, in particular, D’Agostino broke through the right side of Latina’s defense several times, the one defended by Di Renzo. Had they had attackers as cynical as the Nerazzurri, Monopoli would have easily found themselves ahead by one, if not even two goals.

Di Donato explained that the reason for the Nerazzurri’s difficulties was a consequence of Del Sole’s position being too low, having been invited several times to move up by the coach. This made it easier for Monopoli to gain ground without having to worry about defending the out.

Seen from the stands, it seemed exactly the opposite: Del Sole almost never returned and created a twenty-metre hole between him and Di Renzo, giving the line of three behind Santaniello the opportunity to quickly attack the Nerazzurri’s right arm who found himself practically acting as a buoy in the dialogue between Starita and D’Agostino. It’s good for us that Monopoli didn’t take advantage of Del Sole’s lack of inclination to return, but he should still be given credit for scoring a goal of excellent technical workmanship and beauty.

Latina will be in Cerignola on Saturday: a probative test that will say a lot about the depth of the team. It is the first time in the season that the Nerazzurri are competing with a top five given that, ranking in hand, 6 of the 8 teams they have faced so far currently occupy the last seven positions in the Group C ranking. Cerignola is from another pasta.
