The Challenges and Expectations of Novak Djokovic’s Return to Competition

Àlex Corretja talks about what he can expect from Novak Djokovic, world number one on his return to competition, for which there is less and less left. The Spanish former tennis player talks about the difficulty of returning from being stopped while the rest of the circuit continues its activity.

Novak Djokovic decided to play the match that qualified Serbia for the final phase of the Davis Cup days after winning the US Open, a very different strategy from the majority on the circuit. Hardly any player has wanted to miss the Asian tour, which has had Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev, Carlos Alcaraz and Hubert Hurkacz as great protagonists, among others. With many options to maintain number one for the end of the season, Novak Djokovic now has the Paris-Bercy Masters 1000 and the ATP Finals as scheduled dates.

“I think Djokovic is the master of the schedule because he knows exactly what he has to do at all times, but to do so, you have to know your body, you have to know your game. You need to know exactly where your best tennis is, at what moments,” explains Àlex Corretja in Eurosport.

“Novak chooses very well, but at the same time, it is very difficult because it is not easy not to compete for a month and a half and then show up and be ready to do what he does. You have to accept the situation in the first few days, that maybe you don’t feel so good because the other players have been playing a lot and you have been at home. Even if you have been training, it is different.”

AN UNBEATABLE DJOKOVIC

“I think Novak should probably be one of the biggest candidates, if not the most, to win the two finals, both in Paris-Bercy and in Turin. He has played so well all season that he has a lot of confidence in himself. Every time he steps on the court, I think he feels that he is going to be almost unbeatable, if he is prepared.”
