Spremberg/Abensberg (dpa/bb) – KSC Asahi Spremberg has already secured the greatest success in the club’s young history, now the judoka from Lausitz want to crown the season in the Final Four for the German team championship. “In general, we are one of the strongest teams in the Bundesliga. We want to take advantage of this opportunity,” said coach and club boss Dirk Meyer before the semi-final on Saturday in Abensberg against KSV Esslingen.

Spremberg finished in first place in the 1st Bundesliga North and thus confidently reached the Final Four, which is hosted by German record champions TSV Abensberg, for the first time since promotion to the Bundesliga in 2017. In the second semi-final the hosts meet the Hamburg judo team. The gold final is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

The Lausitzers certainly have the bronze medal. “This is another milestone for our little club. We are already the third best team in Germany – crazy,” said Meyer, who can field almost the best line-up.

Spremberg expects a mammoth task in the semi-final against the team from Esslingen, which is made up of numerous top judokas. “We’re the underdogs, but we’re going ‘all in’ and have nothing to lose,” said Meyer. The only duel so far with the South Germans was lost 2:5 in 2020.
