Neandertaler Baseball Club Dominates Last Home Game of the Season, Securing Championship

This is what winners look like. Photo: Neandertaler Baseball Club The Zülpich Eagles came to Hochdahl for their last home game of the season on October 1st.

A week earlier they had secured the championship in the state league and promotion to the association league. In the best baseball weather and with their fans behind them, the Neanderthals’ goal was to inflict their second defeat of the season on their opponent.

The game also started very promisingly. After the first 3 Eagles batters were sent back into the dugout with a fly-out and 2 strike-outs by our starter Bruno Fengler, the TSV Hochdahl baseball players scored 4 runs in the first inning. The next two runs each brought 1 run for the Eagles, which could not be answered. So far it’s been a game on par.

After the opponent again had no score in the 4th inning, the Neanderthal offense exploded with 12 runs in 16 at-bats, crowned by a very rare home steal from Tim Faßbender. New score: 16:2, the mercy rule was getting closer.

Zülpich managed to put 6 more runs on the scoreboard in the 5th, 6th and 7th rounds. But the “Neandis” also scored twice, so that after 6 ½ innings the game ended with an 18:8 win with a 10-run rule.

Strong pitching, tight defense and, above all, a very good batting performance were the reasons for the clear victory against an opponent about whom the Kölner Stadtanzeiger headlined the previous week: The Eagles are eating up the state league.

The dentist came to visit us in Hochdahl.

On October 22nd, the TSV Hochdahl baseball team will end this year’s season with a guest appearance in Ratingen at the Goose Necks. Play Ball is at 1 p.m.
