Riots Erupt as FC Erzgebirge Aue Fans Storm Saxony Cup Game

The Saxony Cup game between BSG Stahl Riesa and FC Erzgebirge Aue offered spectators a football festival for a long time. But shortly before the end of the game, things took a hit when fans of the third division soccer team stormed the interior.

Only 39.5 hours after the final whistle of the third division game against SC Freiburg’s Bundesliga reserve, FC Erzgebirge Aue was back in action on Tuesday. This time, coach Pavel Dotchev’s team faced BSG Stahl Riesa in the national cup. There the violets achieved an easy 4-0 away win.

After the strain of travel last weekend, the third division team sent a B team onto the pitch. Only three players who played in the 1-0 win in Breisgau on Sunday evening were also part of the game in Riesa. For example, keeper Louis Lord and U19 young player William Kallenbach made their professional debuts for FC Erzgebirge.

The purple-whites took the lead in the 12th minute of the game through offensive player Maximilian Thiel. Joshua Schwwirten had crossed the ball from the baseline into the penalty area, Thiel gave the Riesa goalkeeper no chance. After that, the violets went back a few gears, so there was no longer a four-class difference. The seventh division team had a few chances, but left them unused. The FCE then increased the lead to 2-0 before the break. Again it was Thiel who this time converted a cross from Kilian Jakob.

After the break, the third division team hardly allowed any chances. On the other side, the lead was increased. First there was an own goal, then Kallenbach made it 4-0 on his debut. The final score of a game in which three other FCE young players, Aaron Henkel (U19), Tommy Stopp (U19) and Quentin Fraulob (U17), celebrated their debut – but also a game that had to be interrupted due to riots.

Shortly before the end of the game, FC Erzgebirge supporters stormed the interior in the 84th minute. According to information from Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, fans of SG Dynamo Dresden are said to have approached the Riesa Firalpi Arena and provoked supporters of the purple-white team, whereupon they crossed the fences of the guest block and forced their way into the interior. Police security officers tried to calm the scenes. After the game was interrupted for around 25 minutes, referee Ronny Walter was able to whistle the game again and let it finish.
