Zverev is appealing against the penalty order

Tennis professional Alexander Zverev lodged an objection on Tuesday against a penalty order from the Tiergarten district court from the beginning of October. The court had ordered the Olympic champion to pay a fine of 450,000 euros for bodily harm. The 26-year-old is accused of physically abusing a woman during an argument in Berlin in May 2020.

Zverev’s lawyers rejected the accusation. The Hamburger’s legal representatives claimed that the allegations on which the penalty order was based had already been refuted by a report from a Berlin forensic doctor. The criminal order procedure suffers from “the most serious procedural violations”. Zverev will take action against this with “all means possible,” his lawyers said in a press release.

The court followed the request of the Berlin public prosecutor’s office, which had requested a fine of 90 daily rates of 5,000 euros each. As a rule, an entry in the certificate of good conduct is made after a conviction of 90 daily rates.

After Zverev’s objection, the district court announced on Tuesday that it would again hear those involved in the proceedings. Then there will probably be a trial, explained the court spokeswoman. The woman who was allegedly injured appears as a co-plaintiff in the proceedings. Zverev is presumed innocent until he is legally convicted.

He spoke publicly about the accusation for the first time in July at the tournament in Hamburg. At the time he said: “From my side: I completely reject the allegations. My lawyers are taking care of the matter. I won’t say anything more about it.”
