Umana Reyer Secures Victory in Game 2 Against UNAHotels, Tying Series 1-1

With a performance of great character, with only a few small fears at the end of the last period (when Reggio Emilia came back to -5), Umana Reyer won Game 2 of the quarter-final series against UNAHotels by 83-75, bringing the situation tied (1-1) ahead of Game 3 and Game 4 scheduled at PalaBigi on Thursday and Saturday.

THE MATCH

Janelidze is back on the scoresheet, the orogranata starting five does not change (Spissu, Tucker, Casarin, Simms and Kabengele, while the approach of Umana Reyer changes, who defends aggressively but correctly and circulates the ball excellently, bringing home two fouls by Black in the first minute and a half and taking it to 11-6 at 3’30”, which becomes 13-6 at 6′ following yet another defensive recovery, with the guest’s time out ready.

In the 7th minute the margin reached +12 (18-6) before Chillo returned to score for his team after 4’30”, even making two triples in a row, opening Reggio’s small break at the end of the first quarter, which closes at 23-16. At 12′ the orogranata are again at +12 (28-16) and halfway through the second quarter Umana Reyer leads 34-20, even though in the meantime a technical has arrived for coach Spahija. Spissu takes home Black’s third foul for a moving block and Kabengele makes a big statement with an offensive rebound, making it 35-20 in the 16th minute.

The Venetian bench calls a time out at 38-27 at 16’30”, shortly after a new technical, following Galloway’s third foul. In the 18th minute, after the coach also sanctioned the Reggio Emilia bench, Tucker updated the maximum lead to 43-27 and finally returned to the locker room at 43-29.

The second half also started well, with Faye’s third foul immediately and then Spissu’s triple to make it 48-31 in the 22nd minute. Umana Reyer keeps their opponents at a distance by focusing on attack above all on Kabengele and Spissu, who with another triple forces Reggio to time out at 55-37 at mid-period. The margin of advantage of the orogranata in a nervous match (double technical for Weber and Heidegger) progressively increases up to 61-40 at 28’30”, with Wiltjer’s triple which finally closes the quarter at 64-45.

Another triple, by Heidegger in the 32nd minute, brings Umana Reyer back to 69-48, with another guest time out, from which UNAHotels returns with the right attitude: first it’s 0-5, with a time out this time by Spahija in the 33′ at 69-53, then the break extends to 0-11 in just 2′ due to a few too many lost balls and an unsportsmanlike whistle whistled on Kabengele. Umana Reyer restarts from a Kabengele basket and is back up 73-59 at 35’30”.

A forced interruption due to a flight (fortunately without physical problems) by Kabengele on the timekeepers’ table is exploited by a Reggio Emilia team in which Galloway stands out as the absolute protagonist: in the 37th minute it is 73-67 and, after the 77-67 orogranata at 38’30”, with a 4-point play by Reggio’s number 9 it’s 78-73 with 41” to go. An offensive rebound by Kabengele on Spissu’s second free throw on Emilia’s systematic foul has a decisive weight in the economy of the match: at -21″ it is again only +5 for Umana Reyer who in any case finally completes the victory from the line by 83- 75.
