Euro 2032: Christillin ‘Italy-Türkiye is a done deal’ – Football

“No, there won’t be any surprises tomorrow, the 2032 European Championships will be assigned to Italy and Turkey, it’s a done deal. The field has been left free to Great Britain and Ireland for 2028 and consequently the green light for Italy has been decided and shared and Turkey for Euro 2032. The vote is scheduled for tomorrow, we will be in Nyon, there will be a short presentation made by our delegation made up of the FIGC president Gravina, Gigi Buffon and Ilaria D’Amico. And then we will work on the stadiums”. Thus Evelina Christillin, additional member of UEFA in the FIFA Council and Juventus fan, guest of Radio Anch’io Sport on Rai Radio 1. “Only five cities will be able to host the European Championship – adds Christillin – It is an agreement made at UEFA by the federations Italian and Turkish, even if there is not yet a definitive choice on the five cities. There will be a sort of contest: a way to compete to renovate or make completely new stadiums, which are Italy’s main problem. Italy and Turkey are two candidates welcomed by UEFA, the Italian problem concerns the stadiums. There will be a sort of tender of the ten cities, which will have to present their projects by the end of 2026. We will see who the five finalists will be” .
Then Christillin addresses the issue of violation of human rights in Turkey: “In this sense I don’t think there will be further repercussions. Let’s not forget that the last edition of the Champions League final took place in Turkey. Relations have been continuous and cordial also from a non-sports point of view. And then look at what happened in UEFA and FIFA with the decision to have the Under 17 junior teams of Russian nationality play again: with sport we try to go beyond sport, to build bridges and not barriers. I believe that this double candidacy can foster good relations through sport also in other, much more important fields.”
And on the new Champions League format: “If Italy manages to maintain second place in the UEFA ranking – concludes Christillin – we will have five teams qualified in the next Champions League. We hope that with the new Spalletti course we will be in a position to also have the fifth team “.
