NBA Coach Injured During Game: Will Chris Finch Return to the Sidelines?

What a misfortune in an important game.

Ten years ago he coached the Gießen 46ers in the Basketball Bundesliga. Now Chris Finch (54) is in the NBA play-offs with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

But the coach wasn’t able to celebrate his team’s 122:116 win against the Phoenix Suns in the dugout. Because he was injured during the game, Finch was already in the locker room when the final whistle blew!

According to a report from The Athletic, it was feared that the coach had even torn his patellar tendon!

What happened?

While dribbling near the Minnesota bench, Timberwolves star Mike Conley (36) was bumped into by Devin Booker (27) and the push threw him into Finch. The coach fell to the ground in obvious pain and immediately grabbed his right knee.

Shortly afterwards, Finch was taken to the dressing room, supported by two assistants, barely able to put any weight on his right leg.

NBA star injures his own coach!

Assistant coach Micah Nori, who led the team in the final 1:41, said after the game, “He’s obviously in good shape and so are the guys.”

With Sunday’s victory, the Timberwolves knocked opponents Phoenix out of the play-offs with a 4-0 win. It was the first ever sweep in Wolves history. Now the biggest concern will be the health of their head coach.

“I told him to sit down – he shouldn’t get up so late in the game,” Conley said of the scene of the collision. “He’s in the way. But I’m praying for him, I’m sure he’ll get well.”

It is still unclear whether Finch will be able to coach on the sidelines in the Conference Semifinals, where the Wolves will face the winner of the series between the Denver Nuggets and the Los Angeles Lakers.

The former Bundesliga coach led the Wolves to the third-best record in the West this season; 56 wins were also the second-best result in Wolves’ history, only in 2003/24 were they better (58).
