“I can’t continue my work.” With these words, Luis Rubiales resigned as president of the Spanish Football Association on Sunday evening. As a reason, he did not cite the forced kiss that he had pressed on the lips of world champion Jennifer Hermoso during the award ceremony after winning the World Cup final against England. No, he spoke of “lies” about him and an “excessive campaign” against him. An apology was not to be expected either, after all, the 46-year-old saw himself as a victim of “false feminism” from the start.

With Rubiales, a man is finally gone, against whom allegations of physical assault, embezzlement of association funds for private entertainment and dubious transactions have previously been made. However, that doesn’t change anything. After all, it was the Spanish association that initially wanted to sue Jennifer Hermoso for making false statements. When the attempt to get her to issue a defusing statement failed, the association issued its own – with words that the footballer had never said. It is clear who is lying here. And the system in which women like Hermoso become “victims of a sexist act” remains in place.
