Planned Conversion of Training Room Threatens Existence of Internationally Successful Judo Department

Oberhausen. The planned conversion of their training room for school sports threatens the existence of the internationally successful department.

The judoka of PSV Oberhausen see the existence of their department threatened. The reason for this is a planned renovation of the dojo Hans Böckler vocational college to a fitness room, which would then be assigned to school sports. The template for the 647,000 euro conversion should be City Council on September 25th. The PSV judoka around press officer Gerd Schäfer are therefore looking for the public to draw attention to their concerns.

Schäfer: “The renovation sounds great at first, but the consequences are serious.” This was also discussed with representatives of the school, the school and sports committees in a joint discussion in the spring of the year.

Kolleg sees more need for their own sports lessons

However, the college reports an increased need for sports opportunities. So far, 2021 students have been looked after in sports in the Jürissen, Jansen and Halle West, 3320 hours per year are given. The school management sees 5,400 as necessary.

The PSV judo department counters that the conversion into a fitness room would mean that they would no longer be able to lay out their mats and the room would no longer be usable for them.

As a replacement, the association will be provided with other locations to be determined. Schäfer: “The sports office cannot name any adequate rooms.” Ulrich Hinz, deputy head of the sports department, counters this by saying that the administration will do everything it can to provide the club with adequate rooms, but first we have to wait for the decision to be made.

The judo department would be extremely reluctant to leave its dojo, because the department has had its sporting home in the basement of the Hans Böckler vocational college for over 60 years. The sports office is said to have confirmed that there was never any doubt about the club’s reliability. In the meantime, the department has repeatedly kept the area clean and partially renovated it using its own efforts and financial resources.

No suitable rooms with sprung floors have been found near the center yet

There is also a social factor: the dojo is located in an area of Oberhausen near the main train station that is not considered a top address due to its social composition. The children and young people in particular are from the area. With its location at the intersection of public transport, it offers financially disadvantaged judoka the opportunity to reach the dojo.

For example, a disabled athlete is exempt Bottrop part, precisely because the dojo is so well connected to the main station.

The location is also crucial for both police as Public order office repeatedly – in consultation with the PSV judoka – carried out training sessions there. A move to other areas of Oberhausen would exclude many people from sport.

The numerous successes of the PSV judoka, including becoming vice-European champions, World Cup participants, x-time German champions in the kata area, German champions and Special Olympics gold medalists, the department also counters that with the necessary complex and expensive conversion of the room with a sprung floor with fitness equipment, there would not be enough space for ten people to do sports can. Judoka need the sprung floor, heavy fitness equipment would require a concrete floor, which in turn is unsuitable for judoka.
