Fabreak ton slam: Using Art and Sport to Promote Social Reintegration and Reduce Recidivism

Less than a year before the Paris Olympic Games, the judicial protection of youth (PJJ) is organizing “Fabreak ton slam”, an artistic and sporting relay in nine French cities. On the occasion of the second stage of this tour, around a hundred young people from the educational centers of the PJJ du Grand Est met on the site of the ASPTT, the Metz multi-sports club, to try their hand at around ten of disciplines: tennis, archery, breakdancing etc. “Conveying the values of sport is important: respecting the rules, meeting people, having fun, surpassing oneself”, explains Jérôme Lucien, territorial director of the judicial protection of youth in Moselle. The aim of these activities is to promote the social reintegration of these young minors in difficulty and fight against recidivism.

“The objective is to name the anger”

Among the activities offered, we find a slam workshop led by Melissa Plaza, a former French professional and international footballer.“The objective is to work on emotional intelligence so that they learn to name the anger that is inside them, to get them to think about all their emotions, their anger. These are young people who often have a chaotic path. We imagine that slam is just a writing workshop but it is much more than that.”, testifies Mélissa Plaza. During this workshop, young people were able to learn how to compose rhymes, write about their emotions, speak in public. “For me it comes by itself, I’m used to writing about my daily life, the street, it makes me feel good,” says Enzo, one of the young people in the workshop.
