National soccer coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg is ill and cannot look after the DFB team in the first international matches after the botched World Cup. The 55-year-old will be temporarily represented by assistant coach Britta Carlson at the Nations League games in Denmark and against Iceland on September 22nd and 26th, the German Football Association announced on Friday.

Because of Voss-Tecklenburg’s illness, the analysis of the German team’s early exit from the World Cup will also be delayed, it said. Coming to terms with the failure in the group phase will continue after the national coach returns.

“First of all, we wish Martina a speedy recovery and hope that she returns to our team soon,” Joti Chatzialexiou, sports director of the national teams, was quoted as saying. It is important to look forward after the disappointing World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. “Our goal is clear: we want to qualify for the Olympic Games,” said Chatzialexiou.

Voss Tecklenburg’s husband Hermann Tecklenburg told BILD about his wife’s illness. “The World Cup in Australia took a lot out of her. She came back from Australia already sick, she was mentally and physically weak,” said the 75-year-old: “She is now recovering in our garden, taking it easy, she reads a lot. I take care of you. Thats why I’m here. After all, I am her husband.”
