Bitter farewell for Tuchel

One last press conference of just over three minutes – then Thomas Tuchel had completed this mandatory task at the end of a deplorable Bundesliga season for FC Bayern. The coach didn’t even say goodbye to the dethroned defending champions as runner-up and with a defeat. The 50-year-old lost the season finale with Munich on Saturday at TSG Hoffenheim 2:4 (2:1) – after a 2:0 lead.

“We defended absolutely inadequately,” criticized Tuchel. His team had a string of ball losses and individual mistakes. “Another bitter defeat, completely unnecessary, but… it just happened far too often.” So the Munich team had to give up second place in the table to VfB Stuttgart. The outstanding Andrej Kramaric duped the guests with three goals (68th, 85th and 87th minute).

After the first titleless season since 2012, sports director Max Eberl is still convinced that the record champions’ search for a coach has ended successfully. “We will find a good solution. A very good friend of mine always says: The best comes last,” explained the 50-year-old before kick-off on the TV channel “Sky” after a series of rejections.

The day before, Tuchel had announced that there would be no U-turn for him and that his farewell at the end of the season after only 15 months in office would continue. Roberto De Zerbi, who was considered a possible successor to Tuchel, is now leaving Brighton & Hove Albion. As the Premier League club announced, the collaboration with the 44-year-old Italian will end by mutual agreement after the last matchday this Sunday. However, Eberl indirectly ruled out an obligation.

Neuer calls for a restart at FC Bayern – is Emerson Royal coming?

The quick turnaround in the game was also initiated by a mistake by national goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, which Maximilian Beier, who was nominated for the provisional European Championship squad, used to score his 16th goal of the season (8th). Neuer called for a new beginning after the messed up Bundesliga season. “This was a very difficult season for all of us. I believe that there has to be a new start for us, for the club, and also for our team,” said the 38-year-old. “It is clear that things cannot continue like this. I think we as players also have to show a completely different face as a team for next season in order to be able to fully attack again.”

The Bayern captain would have liked to see Tuchel on the sidelines. “I thought the collaboration was very good,” said Neuer about the outgoing head coach and said about the search for a coach: “We always trust those in charge and we will see what kind of solution is found. But a solution will definitely be found.”

The fact that he and Thomas Müller explicitly campaigned for Tuchel to stay was “completely wrong. Thomas and I didn’t go to the coach.” When asked whether the club also had to show a different face in the new round, Neuer said: “Everyone has a duty.” The question was whether FC Bayern was too high The 2014 world champion answered with a resounding “yes” that he had coach wear and tear.

There will also be changes in the squad; most recently, FC Bayern’s shopping list of seven players included Frenkie de Jong from FC Barcelona. The Munich team should also focus on Emerson Royal as a reinforcement for the right side of the defense. According to “Bild”, Bayern, along with Juventus and AC Milan, are among those interested in the Brazilian, who is said to be allowed to leave Tottenham for a fee of around 29 million euros. The 25-year-old has recently lost his regular place at Spurs; since moving from Barça to North London in the summer of 2021, he has played 100 games (four goals).
