Sharjah Women’s Sports Club Achieves Record-Breaking Success in 2022-23 Season

SHARJAH, 21st August, 2023 (WAM) — His Highness Sheikh Jawaher bint Mohamed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of Sharjah Women’s Sports, stressed that the achievements of Emirati women in local and global sports arenas in the period 2022-23 reflects the dedication of athletes when they are supported by a clear vision and a winning strategy.
Sharjah Women’s Sports Club 2022-23 season culminated in winning 335 medals in individual and team sports at local and international level.
Commenting on these achievements, His Highness said, “Women’s sports have taken a significant step forward in Sharjah, where clubs foster a vibrant culture and sporting institutional norms guide club activities to bring out the fullest potential of women sportspeople. Such results can only be achieved if supported by adequate funding and strategies to build successive generations of high-performance athletes.
His Highness further noted: “We have witnessed an unprecedented season with our champions taking home 335 medals. What we have achieved so far in UAE women’s sports is just a milestone in an ongoing journey, which we in Sharjah are focusing on the women’s sports sector. We encourage greater support and sponsorship from local institutions and expect greater commitment from society. We expect Arab female athletes to qualify in all international sporting arenas.”
The players of the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club finished their season with 335 medals, won in 70 championships, including 51 local and 19 international competitions. Honors earned include 166 gold, 89 silver, and 84 bronze medals in eight individual and team competitions, including 32 in fencing, archery, and shooting; 21 in karate; 6 in basketball and 2 medals each in volleyball and table tennis.
Outstanding achievements of Sharjah Women’s Sports Club during the 2022-2023 sports season include Fatima Al Hosani’s Bronze Medal in Athletics at the Arab Games in Algeria; Amna Al-Awadhi best score of the national team in archery at the World Youth Championships in Ireland. And Yasmin Tahlak broke the record in the 10m air rifle match during the Arab Championship in Egypt and took third place.
This success would not have been achieved without the intensive preparation and comprehensive strategies developed by each game’s technical, administrative and medical teams. The club management has developed clear plans to improve sporting skills and prepare players to participate in championships. One such plan was to provide individual and group camps for all teams – 19 camps locally and 7 internationally.
Sharjah Women’s Sports Club’s dedication to creating Olympians has spared no expense in equipping all of its facilities, preparing athletes to qualify, and training support staff in the sports arena.
One of the most important initiatives jointly launched by the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club was the ‘Media Training Workshop for Sports Teams’, in cooperation with Sharjah Media City (Shams). The workshop introduced participants to the basics of media and the skills they would need to lead impactful media engagements, locally and internationally.
The two entities have also jointly formed a new department dedicated to health care and sports nutrition in line with global best practices. The department of the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club comprises four subspecialties: Sports Medicine, Nutrition, Physiotherapy, Mental Preparation and Psychological Follow-up, led by specialists and experts in relevant fields to offer the club’s players the holistic training and development needed to have success on the highly competitive global stage.
