Women’s World Cup: New Zealand cold, few tickets sold – Football

The women’s World Cup that begins tomorrow at Eden Park in Auckland with New Zealand-Norway hasn’t aroused the interest in local fans that Fifa hoped for. This is why the president Gianni Infantino appealed to them: “It’s not too late, we need you, come and watch the matches”, he said during the press conference to present the tournament.

For which, however, a record number of tickets have been sold up to now: 1.375 million. “We still have tickets available for most of the matches, but don’t wait until the last minute,” added Fatma Samoura, FIFA secretary general.

Also tomorrow, in Sydney, Australia-Ireland will be played but with a full house, in front of 80,000 spectators.

New Zealand will host 29 matches in total, including those in the group of the USA, the reigning double champions. But in recent days Jane Patterson, head of World Cup operations in New Zealand, said the total number of tickets sold for matches in the country was just over 320,000, less than a quarter of the total announced by Fifa on Wednesday. .

At the press conference, Infantino was much more restrained than last December, when – opening the men’s world championship in Doha hosted by Qatar – he said he felt “Qatarinese, Arab, African, gay, homosexual, disabled, migrant worker”. In Auckland she admitted simply: “I feel tired from the flight, but very happy.”
