The information on the martyrdom of Rufina and Seconda agree. Condemned, under Valerianus and Gallienus, by the prefect Giunio Donato, they were martyred in Rome at the tenth mile of the Via Cornelia. Tradition wants them to be sisters who, engaged to two young Christians who had become apostates, devoted themselves to virginity. Having failed with every effort to induce them to apostasy and marriage, the two young men denounced them.
Almost certainly, as early as the 4th century, a basilica was erected over their tomb, perhaps by Pope Julius I, whose location it is impossible to indicate with certainty today. Rufina and Seconda, with their example remind us that in a multi-religious society like the one we are moving towards, the reasons of faith are superior to those of the heart.
