Jasper Philipsen Claims First Belgian Victory in Chaotic Tour de France Stage

Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) has ensured the first Belgian success in this Tour. Mathieu van der Poel was the perfect launch pad for the Belgian spurt bomb. Wout van Aert had to hold back at the end and finished 5th. Although it took almost 20 minutes for the jury to confirm Philipsen’s victory after a chaotic final kilometer.

The 3rd stage of the Tour in a nutshell:

Winner of the day: After 2 stages in last year’s Tour, Jasper Philipsen takes his 3rd sprint victory on the highest stage. Side by side he went through the last corner with Wout van Aert, but he had to keep his legs still. The jury reviewed and reviewed, but eventually declared Philipsen the stage winner.

Loser of the day: Yesterday he had to be satisfied with second place, today Wout van Aert had to hold back in the dangerous last hundreds of meters. Again just not for Van Aert.

Striking: Almost 20 minutes were between the finish and the final confirmation of the stage winner. Philipsen’s sprint was analyzed again and again, but he was still allowed to take the podium as stage winner. Although it was mainly an unhappily placed finish line by the organization.

Statistics: The Roodhooft brothers hit again in their 8th big round. Since the 2021 Giro, Alpecin-Deceuninck has taken at least 1 stage win in every Grand Tour it started at.

Tomorrow: In Nogaro, another ordered mass sprint is on the menu tomorrow. Will Philipsen take 2 out of 2 there or will the other sprinters take sporting revenge?

Powless and Lafay spend a day longer in bulbs and greenery

A bend 200 meters from the finish, it was actually asking for misery by the organization.

After 2 chances for the lightweights in the peloton, it was the turn of the fast men on day 3.

In the stage from the Spanish to the French Basque Country, Neilson Powless attacked to strengthen his mountain jersey, but there was no more to it.

With a devious move, Victor Lafay also successfully defended his green jersey. He attacked just before the intermediate sprint and is therefore narrowly holding on to the green at the end of the day (because he has the same number of points as Philipsen).

Van Aert has to hold back in the last corner, Philipsen triumphs

It was clear that the sprinters would not let themselves be eaten by this (rare?) opportunity.

Soudal-Quick Step seemed to have done its homework perfectly and put Fabio Jakobsen off ideally, but things went wrong in the winding last kilometer.

Suddenly Jasper Philipsen came up with his little train from Alpecin-Deceuninck. The perfect lead-out came in the name of Mathieu van der Poel.

At the ideal moment, Philipsen was able to launch his sprint with Wout van Aert in his wheel. At the bend 200 meters from the finish, Van Aert had to keep his legs still, Philipsen had started flying.

Although he still had to wait 20 minutes for the confirmation of that victory. Had Philipsen deviated too much from his line in the sprint?

No, the jury ruled. De Vlam van Ham takes his 3rd sprint victory in the Tour, Phil Bauhaus was 2nd and Caleb Ewan 3rd.

A shaking head, Van Aert entered Bayonne in 5th place.

Response from yellow jersey Adam Yates (UAE):

17h49. What does the final look like? Between kilometers 2 and 1 there is a small kink, after which it goes in a slightly descending line to the finish. A gentle curve at 200 meters from the end ensures that the finish arch is only visible at 100 meters. It’s a twisty arrival, and certainly not a billiard cloth. The last 100 meters go up with about 3-4 percent. .
