Cuban Archer Hugo Franco Advances to Semifinals in Central American and Caribbean Games

San Salvador.- IN ADJUSTMENT As expected, Hugo Franco appears as the only surviving Cuban in the individual recurve bow tournament of the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games.

The man from Pinar del Río has played the expected role of leader of the Cuban team and is in the semifinals of a contest that will distribute his medals this Thursday.

Hugo defeated his teammate Juan José Santiesteban 6-4 in the quarterfinals, the youngest member of a cast trained by Reyter Téllez and who has already won a bronze medal at the Ciudad Merliot Archery Range.

Santiesteban’s performance has pleased archery fans on the Island. His role was fundamental in achieving third place as a team and now reaching the round of eight best qualifies as an excellent result.

The other Cuban in the quarterfinals, Javier Vega, sold his defeat against a rival who surpassed him in experience in international events: Nicholas D’Amour, from the US Virgin Islands.

D’Amour will precisely be Hugo’s opponent this Thursday in the semifinals, a match that could serve as revenge after the former’s victory in the recent World Cup in Medellín.

Maydenia Sarduy was the only Cuban who could be included in the quarterfinals, but she had to “clash” against the Mexican defending champion Alejandra Valencia, who smiled 7-1 logically. Liduveinis Sierra and Yailín Paredes, the other Cubans in the competition, were eliminated in the early stages.

The same thing happened to the representatives of the compound bow, Omar Sabido and Aismary Breijo, debutants at this level with very little training time.

Cuba will also have medal options with the mixed recurve bow team, made up of Hugo and Maydenia, who will face Puerto Ricans Ángel David González and Nilka Cotto for bronze.
